Photos | Review: Greta Van Fleet Sells Out Madison, Wisconson

Who: Greta Van Fleet – March of the Peaceful Army

Where: Breese Stevens Field, Madison, Wisconsin

When: June 4, 2019

Meteoric. That’s how one might describe Greta Van Fleet’s success since selling out Madison’s newest venue, The Sylvee, just 9 months ago. Since that night back in October, they have released their chart-topping album Rise of the Peaceful Army, won a Grammy for best rock album, and tonight they set the attendance record for Breese Stevens Field by selling out all 10,000 tickets. On a perfect late spring evening, the crowd made up of fans who most likely enjoyed the golden age of blues rock back in the 70’s firsthand, to fans who are still in elementary school, were all eagerly waiting for Greta Van Fleet to take the stage.

With chants of “Greta, Greta, Greta” growing louder, the band emerged and a few lucky fans were treated to white roses tossed out by singer Josh Kiszka. The rest of the band comprised of Jake Kiszka, Sam Kiszka, and Danny Wagner wasted no time in ripping right into the lead single “When the Curtain Falls”. While most bands would wait until later in their set to play their biggest songs, Greta Van Fleet went right into fan favorites “Highway Tune” and “Black Smoke Rising”. From that moment the band would have the crowd in the palms of the hands for the next hour and a half while they put on a brilliant display of their already well-seasoned stage presence. From masterful extended guitar solos by Jake to the gorgeous soaring vocals with just the right amount of raspiness by Josh, this is a band that has clearly mastered their craft.

Throughout the entire night everyone’s eyes seemed to be fixated on the stage. Even the people at the opposite end of the soccer stadium. Song after song, guitar solo after guitar solo, were all followed by a sea of clapping hands. The crowd ate up every second of the band’s performance. They finished off their set with “Black Flag Exposition”. With lighting rolling in from the distance, the crowd was not ready to leave just yet though. They needed more and Greta Van Fleet definitely delivered.

The band came back out, accompanied by opening band Ida Mae, to perform a cover of “I Shall Be Released” by The Band. By Josh’s own admission, that very day was the first time they had ever even practiced that song together, and they pulled it off flawlessly. Josh and the husband and wife duo of Ida Mae each took turns on vocal duties and did the song great justice. From there Greta Van Fleet capped off their incredible night in Madison with “Safari Song”.

After consecutive sold-out performances in Madison, let’s just hope that Madison can find a venue that can hold all of Greta Van Fleet’s fans, because a soccer stadium that holds 10,000 clearly isn’t enough.
