Two years ago or so Acceptance played at the local venue by my house. At the time I only knew two songs by them and that was as far as my Acceptance knowledge went. Jump all the way to present day and I am fully aware of how awesome the band is. Colliding By Design is the newest release from the band, while it is not a complete reinvention of their sound, it combines old and new elements together to get that second Acceptance release we’ve been waiting for.
The album starts out with the lead single “Diagram of a Simple Man”. The song is very catchy and a really good introduction. The album then moves into the title track for the album. Acceptance stated that they named the album this because there was a big sense of fate that the band members felt brought them all back together. Lyrically, the song doesn’t sound like it deals with the fate of the band members. It seems like it deals with love and having that person you love leave.
The fourth track, “Come Closer”, stuck with me the most. The song has a lot of interesting musical elements to it. Listening to it reminded me of 80s music at certain parts. The song begins with a solid synth tone in the background and vocals on top. There’s a section toward the end that has a guitar solo and this is where those 80s elements come in, giving the song a funky punch of sound.
“Haunted” was the second single off of the album, it’s complete with a powerful and catchy chorus that will be stuck in your head for days. If you’ve been waiting for another incredibly catchy Acceptance song to scream along to at shows, this is your song. “Haunted” is one that you should memorize all the lyrics to.
The last song on the album is called “Golden”, it’s the perfect track to close this record. It features the lyrics, “We grow old and move on”, meaning that people get left behind as we grow up which is a natural part of life. However, in the case of Acceptance, they grew up and came back together to make this epic album.
I don’t think that when Acceptance broke up they thought they would be getting back together. Little did they know they would collide again later in their lives to create this album and it’s good to have them back.
